On a recent trip to this iconic destination, I loved learning about South Beach’s fascinating history and present from our guide Jennifer on Secret Tour’s Miami Art Deco Cocktail Tour (a tour I highly recommend!). All of the below restaurant recommendations and some of the unique activities recommendations come from Jennifer, a long-time South Beach resident and former restaurant owner.
Let’s dive in!

A Brief History
South Beach, or “SoBe” as locals affectionately call it, has come a long way since its origins as a swampy barrier island. Sitting just four feet above sea level (South Beach is at high risk for severe flooding!), this man-made island was transformed in the early 20th century by American entrepreneur and transcontinental road advocate Carl Fisher, who envisioned it as a playground for the wealthy, complete with luxury hotels and golf courses.
The 1920s saw the construction of many iconic hotels, with several being built between 1929 and 1930. The Art Deco architecture that defines the area today emerged during this period, representing hope and resilience during the Great Depression.
During World War II, South Beach played a pivotal role as a training ground for soldiers. Post-war, the area became a haven for Jewish families and veterans seeking a new beginning.
In the 1950s and 1960s, musical icons like Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack brought star power to the area, performing in swanky venues and enjoying the upscale lifestyle the region offered. Their presence helped solidify South Beach as a glamorous destination, blending music, luxury, and a touch of mischief.
In the 1970s, South Beach was hit some hard times and dealt with issues like crime, poverty, and deteriorating infrastructure of its iconic Art Deco buildings.

The 1980s brought both challenges and opportunities. Known as the “Cocaine Cowboys” era, Miami saw an influx of drugs, with 75% of the nation’s cocaine supply passing through the city. The crime wave earned it a reputation as the murder capital of the U.S. However, this turbulent period also set the stage for an artistic and cultural renaissance in the 1990s. Modeling agencies, international tourists, and creative visionaries flocked to South Beach, drawn by its unique energy (example: the Breakwater Hotel became famous for Calvin Klein’s Obsession campaign featuring Kate Moss in 1986).
The 1980s and 1990s saw another wave of musical influence, with artists like Madonna, Gloria Estefan, and Whitney Houston frequenting South Beach’s nightclubs and private parties. Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, played a pivotal role during this era by bringing international artists like Bob Marley and Macy Gray into the fold, further establishing South Beach as a cultural hotspot. Today, South Beach continues to draw musicians, DJs, and performers from around the world, making it a must-visit destination for anyone who loves music and nightlife.
Today, South Beach is a melting pot of cultures, blending Latin American, Caribbean (one-third of the population is Cuban), European, and American influences. South Beach’s diversity is reflected in its food, music, art, and festivals.
